Puch Denied Access to Audubon Place.

Next to Tulane University and right off historic St. Charles Avenue is the privately-gated street of Audubon Place. It’s basically across from Audubon Park and appears to be an inviting place to visit. But you can’t. A guard is at the street entrance and access is restricted to residents and guests only. Audubon Place arguably has the most expensive residential properties in New Orleans. It began in the 1890s as an exclusive luxury development where only homes above a certain size and price could be constructed. And like the adjacent park, its name is recognition to John James Audubon, the naturalist who famously illustrated birds in their natural habitats.

Can you say Tchoupitoulas?

tchoup

Tchoupitoulas Street (CHOP-i-TOO-ləs) gets its name from an Indian tribe that possibly means “those who live at the river.” Tchoupitoulas is one of many street names that confuses visitors to the city. It begins in downtown New Orleans at Canal Street (opposite the French Quarter) and follows the curve of the Mississippi River until it ends at Audubon Park. The popular and well-known uptown, music venue Tipitina’s is also located on Tchoupitoulas. Makes pronouncing Puch (po͝ok) easy, doesn’t it?
